Keywords are one of the most important, if not the most important things to learn about when starting a blog or website. There are certain procedures you have to follow with regards to keywords if you want readers to land on your blog or site. Search engines work properly if they are well guided by the correct keywords. Think of search engines as if they were the engine of a car. Unless the proper gas is put into the tank the car can’t run at it’s optimum capacity. It may even make the car stall. You don’t want to have your website stall. This is the reason why keywords are indispensable; they are the signposts you put along the way.
So, just what is a keyword? The words or phrases that searchers type into the search engines when they are looking for information are called keywords or key phrases. These keywords are picked up by the search engines. The search engines then list the best sites related to that keyword information. As you can see, if you don’t have good, correct, keywords, your blog or website will not appear on the top or even near the top of the very long list.
You can pick good keywords or phrases with the help of several keyword tools. It would be best for you to choose those keywords with low competition because then it would be easier for you to rank high on the list.
I have some tips for you on finding good keywords. They will make this tedious task easier for you. Google has a great tool called Google keyword tool. This keyword tool is easy to use, free, and gives suggestions for other keywords related to your search. You could also try Nichebot and Wordtracker.
Use a piece of paper or a spreadsheet for your results; divide it into 3 columns. The 1st column is for Keywords; label it. The 2nd column is for Global Search Results; label it. The 3rd column is for Local Search Results; label it. Now type your keywords or phrases into the search box and check the results. The results shown are the average monthly searches for keywords typed by people.
3. Analyze your results. The higher the number of searches, the broader your niche is, the more competition for page rank you have. On the other hand, the more precise your keyword is, the lower the volume of competition. The best thing to do is to get keywords that are not too broad. Don’t take too defined ones, either, because that means very few people are searching for them. In the end it actually all depends on you. Best choice is between 3,000-25,000 competition.
