For experienced internet marketers, SEO is a process learned over years of trial and error. They learn, they make mistakes but ultimately they gain from their knowledge. Unfortunately for many aspiring internet marketers nowadays, there is a whole host of misinformation flowing across the internet at the moment. Quite a bit of this misinformation is content that has seen many years of “service” across the internet. It is content that has been rewritten and then posted up again by people pertaining to know what they are talking about, but they don’t really. We shall outline two of these myths in the passages below.
The first myth is about page rank and how this can determine your websites rankings. This statement is a false one, full stop. Just a cursory search on Google will show you that sites can rank higher or lower than each other for particular keywords irrespective of whether they are high or low PR sites. As Google uses many, many factors when it comes to ranking a site, it ensures that no particular one is too dominant.
The second myth is the one that states that all low competition keywords are just easy to rank for in the search engine results. This is also not true. While a good general rule of thumb is to work with the so-called “low hanging fruit”, many webmasters make the mistake of looking for keyword phrases having less than XYZ competition and then just working with these.
In reality, looking for the keyword phrases that have under a certain amount of competition should only be the beginning of the keyword research process. As an example, there may be some keywords with under 4000 competition that could be extremely hard to rank for, whereas others that have 15,000+ competition could be fairly simple. Other things have to be factored in as well. Page optimisation, backlinks and strength of competing sites are all some of these factors.
