Communication doesn’t just convey information, it inspires trust, builds credibility, stimulates involvement and generates loyalty. But in today’s global, hi-tech, rapidly changing business environment, how do you ensure you’re communicating effectively?

In this article you will find the 5 things your web host must have. When you are researching a web host and you come across one that does not have these 5 things just click away to find one that does have what you need. 5 Features Your Web Host Must Have -

Greatest Control Panel: The control panel is the place you will be visiting most often, so it should be easy to use, have all the features you need, etc. You can find a great control panel with cPanel, which provides one of the best control panel user experiences among all of the others.

CPanel offers more than 42 different icons, 50 of the most used PHP scripts, shopping carts, forums, and even a WordPress blog – one of the best blog hosts out there. cPanel also provides an easy to use layout and navigation so when you do use it you can forget about frustration.

But there’s no need to ‘throw out the baby with the bathwater’. Email is an excellent solution to many communication needs. And for those it is ill-equipped to handle, there are newer, more appropriate technologies that are built for the job…

The best way to accomplish this is with a room bug. You can place a room bug in any environment, and then listen to the conversation from a secure location. Because they can only be picked up by radio scanners, Ultra High Frequency (UHF) room bugs are your best option.

3) Binoculars-Since a lot of your surveillance will take place from a distance, it is important to have a pair of binoculars with you. Having a quality pair of binoculars can mean the difference between whether or not you are successfully able to identify someone.

4) Audio and Video Recorder-This is the gadget that the general population almost always associates with spies. An audio and video recorder will allow you to obtain and preserve valuable information and evidence.

5) Notepad-This may seem overly obvious, but many spies neglect to carry a notepad with them.

Whether its writing down a license plate number or a description of a suspicious person, a notepad is arguably the most important tool a spy can carry.

HTML is a markup language used to create documents designed to be accessed across the World Wide Web using browser software such as Internet Explorer or Firefox. The version of HTML in current use is known as XHTML, a stricter, rationalised version of the original HTML specification. One key thing to note about HTML and XHTML pages is that they describe the content and structure of the page rather than the position and presentation of the elements on the page.

The first significant difference between an HTML and XHTML page is the document type definition. There are several ways in which this specification can be done in Adobe Dreamweaver. One of the most convenient is to go to the Modify menu and choose Page Properties. Here, in the category marked Title/Encoding, one of the options reads Document Type (DTD).

There are a good few options available in the drop-down menu next to this setting, some relating to HTML version 4 and some to XHTML version 1. These DTD settings control the rules for the mark-up language so that the browsers can render the content correctly. For any new content you are creating, the best specification to choose is XHTML 1.0 transitional since it uses the current XHTML specification while allowing backward compatibility with slightly older browsers.

When looking at an HTML page, the structural content is perhaps not immediately apparent. However Dreamweaver provides a number of useful ways of keeping tabs on the structure of your web page content. One of these is known as the Tag Selector. Wherever the cursor is positioned, the HTML code relating to that part of the page is displayed in the bottom left of the page on the Status Bar in an area called the Tag Selector.

When the browser reads the page, the tags surrounding text and other elements communicate to the browser the structural importance of each element. Thus, for example, the H1 tag tells the browser that a piece of text is a major heading, while the H2 tag signifies a sub-heading, and so on. When these tags are displayed in the Tag Selector, you can get an idea of the structure of the page and you can also click on any tag to select the element(s) it contains.

The tags tell the browser the structural importance of each element but the page doesn’t contain any information that helps the browser decide how each element should be displayed. This job is done by CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). An XHTML page is still basically an HTML page. However, the syntax used is stricter.

XHTML is case sensitive: HTML is case insensitive. In XHTML, tags are always lowercase, so the H1 tag must always be written h1: In HTML either H1 or h1 can be used.

In XHTML, the closing tag cannot be ommitted: in HTML it is permissible to have an opening tag without a closing tag. One example of this is a horizontal rule (hr) which creates a dividing line between two sections on a webpage. This element is traditionally represented by a single tag, since it can never be used as a container. In XHTML, there is a special syntax for such elements: a single tag which serves as both an opening and closing tag (hr/). In HTML, a single opening tag is used with no closing tag (hr).

In summary, XHTML is the current version of HTML and this is the standard that should be used for any new projects. However, existing projects that you may inherit may well contain HTML code rather the XHTML. Therefore, it makes sense to be aware of both. Remember also that HTML and XHTML describe only the structure of web pages : neither of them should contain information regarding the display and presentation of this content. The appearance of web content should be specified using CSS.

When creating a new website in Dreamweaver, you do not simply start creating web pages willy-nilly; you begin by defining a new site and then you create the various pages within it.

Creating a new site is simple: just choose Site – New Site. The Site Setup dialog window which appears has four categories of information: Site, Servers, Version Control and Advanced Settings. This arrangement represents an improvement over previous versions. It is clearer and gives you rapid access to just those site settings that you need to change. This is particularly true if you do not yet have all of the necessary information and just want to plug in the bits that you do know and then move on to building the site.

There are two key elements in defining a new Dreamweaver site: the Site category and the Servers category. Site information applies to details of your personal, local version of the site-the version that only you can see; stored on your workstation or laptop. Information supplied in the Servers category tells the program how to connect to the server hosting your site-and, if necessary, other servers that you may want to use for testing purposes.

The first thing your need to do is to enter a name for the site. This will only be seen by you as you work on the site; so feel free to enter any descriptive name.

As we have seen, a website consists of many different files and several different file types. Before you begin to create any of these files, it is important to designate a location for them all. Dreamweaver refers to this folder as the Local Site Folder; “local” implying “for your eyes only”; in contrast to the live version on the server.

The Local Site Folder will contain your version of a given website, the version that you develop and test. When you are happy with a file that you have created and tested in the Local Site Folder, you upload it to the server to make it live.

The local site folder does not, of itself, possess any special properties; you just create a folder in any convenient location. If this is a brand new site, the folder may be completely empty. If any resources are available, they can be placed inside the Local Site Folder. For example, the Local Site Folder in figure 1-9, below, shows sub folders for images, flash movies, PDF files and video clips.

If the site is an existing one which is already live (let’s say for example; all of the files have been emailed to you or have been downloaded via FTP), the site files can be placed inside the Local Site Folder ready for editing in Dreamweaver.

To tell the program the location of the Local Site Folder, click on the Browse for folder button (the folder icon), navigate to the folder, open it then click the Select button, on a PC, or the Choose button on a Mac.

Our company runs training courses on Adobe Dreamweaver, the industry-standard web development software. And we are increasingly finding that the profile of the person wanting to learn Dreamweaver is becoming distinctly, well, frankly, unpredictable! It seems that just about anyone nowadays can find themselves needing to build a website or to create web content in some shape or form.

Our conclusion is that the vast majority of people learning Dreamweaver nowadays are not specialists in web development or web design. They are simply people who need to develop web content in some shape or form and who have chosen or been recommended Dreamweaver as the best tool for the job. Dreamweaver is perceived as the obvious choice for both casual and professional web developers.

Dreamweaver has become the industry standard web development software, seeing off rivals like Microsoft FrontPage. And it deserves its position. It is a great software package with powerful features and an approachable interface which lets anybody who can use a computer embark on a basic software development project and, with a bit of patience and knowledge of a few fundamentals, bring it to a conclusion. Dreamweaver has attained this dominant position because its creators have always aimed to satisfy the needs of all the different types of users of their software.

In the early days of web development, there were two types of web development tool: those used by coders (the specialists who understood the technologies underlying web pages) and the visual software tools which functioned in a manner similar to word processing and page layout programs and were used by non-specialists and inexperienced web developers. The visual programs (which included Dreamweaver) had a very poor reputation among web professionals who found that the code produced by these programs was clumsy, verbose and inefficient.

While other programs such as FrontPage were content to generate code which contained a vast array of confusing proprietary elements which were not essential to the page, Macromedia were adding features to Dreamweaver which demonstrated their commitment to making it a serious web development tool. With each release of the program, they made the coding environment more complete, adding features such as line numbers, code-hints and colour-coding. They also added powerful utilities for checking and cleaning up the code generated visually and in other environments such as Microsoft Word.

Macromedia also added a number of features aimed at speeding up web development which they knew would be attractive to serious web developers. For one thing, they offered a series of features which would automatically generate server-side content and save developers a great deal of programming time. Initially, these features were only available in a special edition of Dreamweaver called “Dreamweaver UltraDev”. When these features became available in the standard edition of Dreamweaver, the program became much more attractive to the serious web developer.

Macromedia further enhanced Dreamweaver’s reputation as a tool for serious web developers by added collaborative functionality to the program; features which acknowledged the fact that a lot of web developers are part of a team. Dreamweaver’s two main collaboration features are “File check in Check out” and “Design Notes”. The former allows developer A to open a file and check it out; so that developer B knows that the file is being worked on by A and doesn’t start making conflicting changes to the file. The design notes feature allows developer A to attach a note to a particular file which can then be picked up by developer B.

The web is constantly evolving and new technologies are being developed to make web sites more appealing to visitors. The owners of Dreamweaver have always been very good at embracing these new technologies sooner rather than later. An illustration of this can be seen in the latest version of Dreamweaver which includes a series of CSS layouts which can be used by newbie web developers to create pages which separate web content from information relating to the styling of that content. Dreamweaver also has useful features for making it easy to make your content accessible to web surfers with disabilities.

Dreamweaver CS3, the latest version of the program, also incorporates some great new features for adding Ajax functionality to web pages. Ajax offers web developers a way of creating web applications that execute rapidly and are seamlessly incorporated into the standard content of the web page. Coding Ajax web applications requires a good knowledge of JavaScript programming. Using Dreamweaver’s Spry Framework for Ajax, developers can create sophisticated Ajax applications without having to write the code themselves.

Each new release of Dreamweaver brings exciting as well as practical new features which always seem to slot nicely into the familiar easy-to-use interface. This coupled with the fact that Dreamweaver always allows experienced professionals full access and control over every aspect of the web pages and web applications they are developing should ensure that the program continues to be the automatic choice for any individual or organisation needing a decent software tool for web development of any kind.

You can find out more about Dreamweaver training courses, visit Macresource Computer Training, an independent computer training company offering Dreamweaver training courses at their central London training centre.

If you have ever wanted to build your own website, you might not even know where to start. If you’ve done the research and you’re looking for the simplest program for regular users, it’s likely that you’ve heard of Adobe Dreamweaver. This is one of the simplest web design programs to use, and the fact that it includes an HTML editor just makes it that much more useful. It doesn’t matter if you’re looking to create a website for fun or for business. There’s something for everyone in Adobe Dreamweaver, but before you get stuck into design, you need to learn how to use the program properly.

There are so many different books and tutorials out there for Adobe Dreamweaver training, but you might not know how to choose the right one. First of all, if you want learning the program to be as easy as using it is, you’ll need to leave the books on the shelf.

Textbooks are great for other things, but when it comes to web design, having that hands-on experience can make or break your success in using the program. Just like children, who learn the alphabet better by seeing it and writing it, our brains are wired to learn things through example and by being shown. It’s human nature for us to be more “show me” than “tell me” when it comes to learning.

With computers, hands-on practice is essential to your understanding of everything you learn. If you can’t see the computer screen, you won’t know the difference between the pointer and the cursor, except that one is shaped like an arrow and the other is a blinking line. It’s all essentially common sense. If you use training software to learn Adobe Dreamweaver, your brain will get to observe how the program works, and duplicate it better. If you just read a book, your brain will likely get stuck between the execution and information stages and this is because it hasn’t seen the program in use before.

Adobe Dreamweaver makes website building really easy for anyone. Taking the time to invest in training software and tutorials that can show you how to succeed with Dreamweaver will make learning the program just as straightforward as using it can be. It doesn’t matter if you’re a professional web designer, or if you just want to build your own website. You can learn Adobe Dreamweaver much more rapidly if you take the time to get involved in a hands-on training method.

Dreamweaver’s New Related Files facility

HTML is a fairly limited environment which relies on files created with other technologies to add functionality to web pages. Typical examples of related files are server-side includes, CSS, JavaScript and XML. Dreamweaver now includes a feature called “Related Files” which enables you to edit the content of such files, without having to open them separately, and to instantly see the effect of your changes on the main file.

There have also been some nice new additions to the Spry form validation widgets. The Spry Validation Password widget allows you to specify the minimum and maximum number of characters, numbers, uppercase and special characters which can be included in the password entered. The Spry Validation Confirm widget checks that the entries in two fields are identical and displays a customizable error is they are not. This makes it ideal for creating “Password/Confirm Password” or “Email/Confirm Email” functionality.

Photoshop Smart Objects

Spry is Dreamweaver’s Ajax solution which uses JavaScript and CSS to add sophisticated interactivity to your web pages. Dreamweaver CS4 includes some useful additions to its existing range of Spry widgets.

The Spry Tooltip widget allows you to create a tooltip which will appear when the mouse is placed over the specified text or object. Since the tooltip is inside a DIV element, this offers tremendous flexibility as to the appearance of the tooltip. For example, it could include an image or a Flash movie.

Once the image has been imported, an icon is displayed in the upper left of the image indicating that it is a smart object. Also, in the Property Inspector, the location of the original PSD file is shown in a box marked “Original”.

The Photoshop integration which was begun in Dreamweaver CS3 has been enhanced in CS4 to offer via the use of Adobe’s Smart Objects technology. A Photoshop file can be imported directly into Dreamweaver and will automatically come in as a smart object.

Photoshop images are can be inserted using the same techniques as inserting any other image file: Insert – Image; dragging from the Files panel; dragging from the Assets panel; or using the Insert toolbar. A Photoshop-style Optimise window automatically appears and you can choose the settings appropriate for that particular image usually GIF, JPEG or PNG.

The fact that the image is a smart object means that if we resize it in Dreamweaver, it will automatically be re-optimised and a new version of the image will be generated with the new dimensions. (In previous versions, resizing an image would mean that the browser was responsible for resizing leading to poor image quality.

The Property Inspector can be used to change the attributes of any element you select on an HTML page. In previous versions of Dreamweaver, changing the attributes of highlighted text would cause the program to create CSS classes with names like “Style1″, “Style2″, etc. in the head area of the current page. This random creation of styles was often responsible for getting new web developers into bad habits.

HTML is a markup language used to create web pages designed to be accessed across the World Wide Web using browser software such as Internet Explorer or Firefox. The version of HTML in current use is referred to as XHTML, a stricter, rationalised version of the original HTML specification. One important fact to note about HTML and XHTML pages is that they describe the content and structure of the page rather than the position and presentation of the elements on the page.

There are quite a few options available in the drop-down menu next to this setting, some relating to HTML version 4 and some to XHTML version 1. These DTD settings specify the rules that the mark-up language must follow so that the browsers can render the content correctly. For any new content you may be creating, the best specification to choose is XHTML 1.0 transitional since it uses the current XHTML specification while allowing backward compatibility with slightly older browsers.

When looking at an HTML page, the structural content may not always be that obvious. However Dreamweaver provides a number of useful utilities for keeping tabs on the structure of your web page content. One of the most useful is the Tag Selector. Wherever you position the cursor, the HTML code relating to that part of the page is displayed in the bottom left of the page on the Status Bar in an area known as the Tag Selector.

When the browser reads the page, the tags surrounding text and other elements tell the browser the structural importance of each element. The H1 tag tells the browser that a piece of text is a major heading. The H2 tag signifies a sub-heading, and so on. As these tags are displayed in the Tag Selector, you can get an idea of the structure of the page and you can also click on the tags to select the element they contain.

The tags tell the browser the structural importance of each element. However the page doesn’t contain any information that helps the browser decide how each element should be displayed. This is the job of CSS Cascading Style Sheets. An XHTML page is still essentially an HTML page. However, its syntax is stricter. Let’s take a couple of examples…

XHTML is case sensitive: HTML is not. In XHTML, tags are always lowercase so the H1 tag has to be written h1. In HTML H1 or h1 can be used.

In XHTML, the closing tag of an element cannot be ommitted: in HTML it is permissible to have an opening tag without a closing tag. One such example is the horizontal rule element (hr) which creates a dividing line between two sections on a webpage. This element is represented by a single tag, since it can never be used as a container for other stuff. In XHTML, there is a special syntax for such non-container elements: a single tag which is both an opening and closing tag (hr/). In HTML, the single opening tag is used without the need for a closing tag (hr).

In summary, XHTML is the current version of HTML and this is the standard that you should use for any new projects. However, existing projects that you may inherit may well contain HTML rather the XHTML. Therefore, you should be aware of both. Remember also that HTML and XHTML describe only the structure of web page content: neither of them should contain information regarding the presentation and display of this content. The display and presentation of web content should be done using CSS.

XML schema definition languages are based on the recommendations of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). They use XML 1.0 syntax and aim to explicit describe the structure of XML documents and constrain the data which they may contain. They offer a distinct improvement on the more limited schema features offered by the Document Type Definition (DTD) recommendation which formed part of the original XML specification released in 1998. The most widely used schema language is the one defined by the W3C in 2001: W3C XML Schema. However, there are alternatives, such as RELAX NG and Schematron.

XML Schema documents are the successors to DTDs and overcome some key limitations associated with them. Firstly, DTDs do not support data types. Secondly, DTDs do not support namespaces. Thirdly, DTDs do not allow developers to accurately define the number of permitted occurrences of elements within their parent element.

An XML schema is concerned with the structure of an XML instance document by defining what each element must or may contain. An element is limited by its type. For example, an element of complex type can contain child elements and attributes, whereas a simple-type element can only contain text. The diagram below gives a first look at the types of XML Schema elements.

Three main purposes are fulfilled by schema documents. Firstly, they can be used to validate XML documents. Secondly, they can be used as a dictionary or grammar for the creation of a given class of XML document. And, thirdly, they can be used to provide documentation for XML documents.

XML schema documents are written in XML and they contain definitions of all elements and attributes permitted in a class of XML documents. The schema document also specifies the structure or hierarchy to which elements must adhere and the type of content each particular element may contain. Elements may be of the simple or complex type. Complex type elements may contain child elements as well as attributes. Simple type element may only contain data. XML documents using a particular schema are referred to as instances of the schema. An XML instance that correctly adheres to its associated schema is said to be valid.

Validation is usually the main purpose of schema documents. Validation offers many benefits. It ensures the consistency of data within a document. It ensures that data has the right structure and internal hierarchy. It ensures that data within the document structure is of the correct type. It allows us to receive data from multiple sources.

Almost all XML documents are generated by programs and scripts written to extract information held in databases and transform it into XML. However, it is also possible for human beings to create XML documents. Schemas can be used during this process to assist in the document creation process. XML schemas also provide a mechanism for documenting XML documents and form an important part of the specification of XML vocabularies.

Extensible Mark-up Language (XML) has very rapidly established itself as a viable technology with a huge range of real-world applications. One of the main reasons for its growing importance and wide acceptance is the fact that it offers a working solution to one of the key problems faced by software developers and computer users alike: the exchange of incompatible data.

Each software program creates its own unique type of binary file which only it can understand. When data is exported in XML format, it becomes a known, clearly defined quantity, independent of the environment in which it was originated.

Adobe’s PDF format is another example of a platform-independent data format which has gained wide acceptance. When a document is saved as a PDF file, its format is set in stone, it can viewed and printed with its layout and formatting intact, without the need for the software which created the original file. However, whereas the PDF format concerns itself primarily with the presenting information, XML is used to describe and encapsulate the information itself.

Though XML itself is still fairly new, the idea behind is over thirty years old. In the 1970s, Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) was developed in an attempt to create an application-independent method of describing and storing data. SGML is a text-based language which relies on the concept of adding mark-up to data which describes the data itself. An SGML document contains both the original data and a lexicon of rules defining the structure of that data. SGML is a fairly complex language and, unlike XML, has never gained wide popularity. In the early 1990s, SGML was used to develop and specify the rules of HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and in the late 1990s, SGML was again called upon, this time as the basis for the creation of XML. In a lot of ways XML is basically a restricted form of SGML.

XML has already proved itself an excellent medium for storing, describing and transporting data, particularly over the web. It offers flexibility, clarity and simplicity. An XML document looks similar to an HTML document and consists of the same human-readable tags. However, the tags used to markup an HTML document are pre-defined: only a limited set of tags can legitimately be used. XML allows you to create a markup language and define the tags which are legitimate for your data. It does this using a schema document, which can itself be an XML document. The schema document specifies the vocabulary and grammar which may be used within the XML document which contains your data.

The fact that, when creating or generating XML documents, you can invent all the rules, means that you never have to twist and force your data into a container which was not designed to hold it. You design tags which reflect the nature of your information; you create a schema document which defines the hierarchical structure of that information; and you specify the type of data each element within your document is permitted to contain. In short, if you end up with an XML documents which is not suitable for holding your information, you have only yourself to blame!

Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) is a technology closely related to XML which is used to transform XML data. XML file are used to set out the ground-rules for a given body of data and to describe the data itself. XSL allows us to take the original XML data and convert it into information which can be displayed in a web browser window or opened with a text editor. XSL can also be used to create an XML file which is a modified version of an original XML file.

When displaying XML elements in a browser window, the XSL elements which enable looping through an XML tree and decision-making really come into their own. One of the key methods used in XSL for looping through elements in an XML file is the the “For-each” element. This requires the “select” attribute to specify which element is to be used in the loop. The “For-each” element normally requires both an opening and a closing tag and any lines of markup placed between the opening and closing tags will be repeated each time the element specified in the “select” attribute is encountered in the XML file.

For example, suppose we have an XML file containing a list of companies and the addresses of their websites. Suppose, as well, that the element which we will be targeting in the XSL “For-each” statement is called “company” and that, within each company element, we have a “name”, “telephone” and “website” element. Before starting our “For-each” loop, we could place the opening tag of an HTML “ul” element (an unordered or bulleted list).

Inside the “For-each” loop, we could output an HTML “li” element and, between the opening and closing tag, output the contents of the “name” and “telephone” elements from the XML file. The data in the “website” could be used to convert the “name” into a clickable link.

As regards the appearance of the data in the resulting HTML output, this would be controlled by a linked CSS file. CSS can be used to format the output in any way we desire, so our bulleted list can take on pretty much any appearance we care to give it.
