Fundamentally, search engine optimization is the study of how search engines work. With a basic understanding of how search engines rank various websites, you can quickly discover the most beneficial techniques for improving your own website’s ranking. SEO has an impact on search engine rankings. In essence your are controlling where your site ranks for a given search term or phrase. Some people feel that having this control is not fair or somehow manipulates search engines in a bad way. I disagree with this statement in that SEO allows you to accentuate the positive related to your website or blog. Yes, people try to game the system but they need to be identified and taken off the web. In such a high stakes game as Internet marketing, some are prone to stretch the boundaries and do things that are inappropriate. Read the rest of this entry »

Websites can be easily found on Yahoo, Google, MSN etc., what’s difficult is knowing how to begin so that your website could be one that is looked up through these search engines as well. Following a few tips can help. If you have an existing website/domain do not invest in a new one while redesigning it or try to redirect the old domain to the new one. Search engines lay great emphasis on how long the domain has been around for. If you are forced to change your domain be prepared to loose a bit of traffic for maybe weeks, months or more.

Your target audience and not the search engine should be the base for you to optimize your site. The target audience are people who type keywords in the search engine, search box. If you are sort of hazy about who your target audience are, look for demographic info online or visit forums, various sites and communities where you target audience hangs out and get information to use for your copywritting and research on key words.

Wordtracker or Google’s Keyword Tool are good tools that will help your research in finding the optimal phrases. ‘Hotel’ or ‘vacation’ are general keywords that do not in any way indicate what your site is about therefore refrain from choosing these type of keywords. There should be various categories of keywords in the navigation and architecture of your site. Let’s say you sold toys, your site visitors might look up your products and services by specific age (toys for a 2 year old), by various types of toys (preschool, soft toys), material (wooden toys / battery operated toys)etc. That means the key to your keywords must be categorization. The SEO (Search Engine Optimization) biz has become really tough, filled with cut-throat competition. Competition is at such a peak, that fierce seems like a meek word. Earlier, anyone who knew SEO could easily, in all the major serch engines, rank highly with a bit of extra efforts compared to their counterparts. It is not the same these days. It’s a lot more difficult to obtain high rankings in search engines. If by chance anyone does get a high ranking, it is not for long because of the competition. Before you know it, it’s gone to someone else.

Long time propositions are a must to optimize your website. Site owners, SEO’s and webmasters focus must shift to acquiring a keyword in a particular position, in a particular search engine in order to increase the traffic and to convert this traffic which was their initial target in to customers instead of concentrating on the small picture of high ranking. The business goal must be all about bringing more people to the website who are looking for the type of services and products that the business is selling. If that is taken care of, the rankings and sales are automatically taken care of.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that any SEO company will magically get that ranking for you or that they will place your website at the top of a search engine. Instead do not forget to think also that there are thousands of other websites who are offering basically the same products and information as you are. What you can do to set yourself apart is shift your focus from high ranking and broaden your horizon. Concentrate on fixing your website by keeping the needs of your customers as a priority. This will automatically serve the purpose of working better for your users and the search engine. Read the rest of this entry »

You want to find a keyword or keyword phrase that is relevant to your audience, has a high search volume, and very little competition. As you might assume, finding the right keyword can be a real challenge. Start with effective keyword research and your SEO efforts will be successful.
