If you’re the proud owner of a website then you should already be aware of how important it is to promote it, actually if you don’t know what you are doing very well then you can cause damage to your site. There are lots of different ways to promote a website, not all of these are good. There are lots of common mistakes that people make when promoting websites and we’re going to look at five of them now…
Spam Free Zone - It might seem like a good idea to send out emails to people you don’t know, this is a surefire way to kill your business. It will also cause you to be blacklisted or barred from large ISP’s, which will utterly cripple any and all of your traffic. Spam will destroy your reputation and kill of whatever business you already have.

Submission - a lot of people shell out money for big submission services, such as the promotions offering to submit your site to 100+ search engines for less than $20, and that may sound like a good deal, but it actually is a bad idea. The problem is however that there aren’t 100 good search engines out there in the first place, using one of these automated systems can also cause your site a lot of harm. It’s very easy for search engines to find out who has been using the submission services. But, if you must use submission services, your best bet then, is to find a genuine service (which will cost more), and you should always get documentation of everything that was done, including any and all email auto responses that the search engines send out.

Search engine submissions- Although there are lots of search engines on the internet very few of them are used regularly. Only around 30 of the search engines on the internet are actually worth you submitting your site to, and you should also try seeking out specialized directories which are suited to your site. If your website is talking about makeup then you should find specialist directories which relate to cosmetics.

Yahoo submission - Yahoo is a very important directory, and it’s also one of the hardest to get into, this is because all submissions are reviewed by humans and not machines. Make sure that the people see your site is a valuable resource for their visitors, and don’t rush your application.

Open for business - There’s no point submitting your website to search engines if it’s not yet open. Make sure that you have tested your site thoroughly, and that every single section is complete, including spell checked, before you begin submitting. Few internet users will bother revisiting a website which has an under construction message anywhere on it.
